Port Hope Directory 1856-57

PREFACE:
In submitting to the Public a work even so inconsiderable as this Directory, we feel called upon to offer a few remarks. The novelty of the undertaking, in this Town, must be our apology for any defects in its execution, and these we venture to hope, may be remedied in a second Edition, which we are so sanguine as to expect may yet be called for.
Our aim has been to afford to strangers a ready index, as it were, to every branch of commercial industry carried on in this our flourishing Town, as well as to our Public Institutions of every description: and to our Townsmen, a little work we trust even they will find occasionally useful.
Should any errors or omissions be discovered,—and in a first attempt of this kind it is almost impossible but that such will be the case,—we do not doubt but that a considerate allowance will be made for them. However ardently we may aspire at perfection, it is rarely attained.
Great pains have been taken to render this work as complete and accurate as possible, although it has been found extremely difficult, in some cases, to obtain the information requisite for compiling a work of this description. We cannot however close our remarks, without returning our warmest thanks to those who have kindly assisted us with information, and cheered us on with their counsel in our arduous labours.
J. S. Steele,
C. G. Gladman,
Port Hope, August, 1856.

The subscriptions in aid of the funds of the Port Hope Branch alone amounted during the past year to the sum of £76 7s. 4d.; and the sales at the Depository amounted to £10 9s. 1½d; 45 Bibles and 137 Testaments in the English Language, and 1 French Bible, were sold.
