PHHS Staff 1959/60
 

MR PETER JOHN BIGELOW was born on the sixth line of the Township of Clarke, attended public school in Clarke and Toronto, and secondary schools in Weston and Lindsay. He was a public school principal for three years and Continuation School principal for two years in Northern Ontario . Since graduation from Queen's with his BA in General Science in 1932, Mr Bigelow has taught high school in Wingham and Port Hope. In June, 1959, he completed 35 years Militia service including six and a half years active service in World War II.
   
MR HAROLD J MUMBY, Vice Principal of Port Hope High School this year teaches Mathematics, Algebra, Trigonometry, and Geometry. He attended high school in Stirling and received his BA from Trinity College, University of Toronto. After graduating, he taught public school at Marmora, and later at Wellington. His first experience teaching secondary school was at Pembroke Collegiate. He came to the staff of Port Hope High School in 1944 and is now in his sixteenth year here.
   
MRS MABEL A ANDERSON was educated at Richmond Hill High School and Victoria College. From '35-'41, she was on the PHHS staff and returned in '56. Her extensive vacation travels make her history classes a pleasure to attend, and her work with this magazine as advisor is a lasting contribution. She is head of the English department at present.
   
MRS M E BEAMISH, a native of Kemptville, is a graduate of Queen's in Physical Education. After post-graduate work in Norway she taught for a year at Elmwood School, Ottawa, then attended OCE. She came to PHHS two years ago and has proven herself a great asset to the students and staff.
   
MR J BUCHAN has been at Port Hope High School two years as teacher of Industrial Arts. He attended Oakwood Collegiate and later Toronto Teachers' College and Ontario College of Education. This school is his first teaching assignment. This year Mr Buchan was the coach of the Boys Bantam Basketball Team, winners of the Lake Ontario District Championship.
   
MR D C DRINKWALTER, teacher of Mathematics, Science, Physics and Chemistry came to us after seventeen years at Madoc High School. There he was the home room teacher of Honour 13A. An Arts graduate specializing in Agriculture, he presides over 12A.
   
MRS J D (RUTH) FORD is in her sixth year of teaching at Port Hope High. She is well known to the students who have taken Geography, English and Social Studies. Mrs Ford received her BA at Victoria College. During the war, she was in the Women's Corps of the Army.
   
MISS EMILY C FOY, educated in Toronto schools, and a graduate of University of Toronto, has spent many years in Port Hope teaching English, German, Spanish, and Art. She finds it very interesting to be teaching some children of former pupils. Miss Foy says she has the nicest class in the school this year - 9D.
   
MISS LOTTE R HAMMOND is in a very special year, her 25th at PHHS. She is head of the French Dept and has been director of the French Club since 1935. A graduate of Queen's, she also took a year of post-grad study in Paris. Her pride and joy is her car ('Little Riley') which she brought back from France this year.
   
MR HERMAN C HASS has been teaching school at Port Hope High for five years, and was previously a master at Trinity College. He hails from U of T where he received his degree. This is his first score of teaching years and we all hope that he will have many more years of teaching math in 207.
   
MR W A HENRY has been teaching at Port Hope High School for two years. As a mainstay of the commercial department, he teaches many of the important business subjects. Before coming to PHHS, Mr Henry worked at the Workmen's Compensation Board. His wife and two children live in Toronto and we often see Mr Henry bombing westward after school.
   
MRS M I MARTYN, a cheerful member of our staff, has been with Port Hope High four years now. Holding up the University of Toronto, her Alma Mater, is one of her favourite hobbies. Mrs Martyn has accomplished a great deal in the Home Economics Department, by capably teaching the rudiments of household science to the girls.
   
MR KENNETH A McLEAN received his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Western Ontario in 1955. Although this is the first school of his career, he can already be termed an excellent teacher of English, Typing, and Penmanship. The production and direction of 'Pygmalion' on Play Night is accredited to Mr McLean. He is to be seen often with his doberman, Melody.
   
MRS H G (HONOR) MEEKING, a graduate of PHHS and St Hilda's College, has taught at Millbrook, Colborne and Norwood. Mrs Meeking teaches English and French, plays the piano and organ for enjoyment, has worked with the girl guides, in town and at camp, and was producer of a very successful senior play 'Cabbages'.
   
MISS FRANCES T O'BRIEN has taught elementary school, high school in Tweed, plus fifteen years at PHHS, and is now head of the Commercial Department and acting-head of the Guidance Department. S he teaches Office Practice, Correspondence, Typing, Shorthand and Book-keeping, and has placed many of her Commercial Graduates in excellent positions.
   
MISS ANITA POCHON, a graduate of PHHS, attended Trinity College, where she majored in History and French. After a six month trip to Europe, she returned to Port Hope where she has been teaching for the last two years. Active in the French Club, she is also the coach of the Junior Girls Teams, to whom she is known for her, 'Come On, Ladies.'
   
MISS M I RIGSBY is one of Port Hope High's newest teachers. She received her degree at St Hilda's, University of Toronto. Miss Rigsby has taught for three and one-half years, last year being spent teaching in the Bahamas. She won fame at Port Hope High by directing the excellent junior play, 'Life of the Party.'
   
MRS S G ROBERTS is our very helpful Latin and History teacher and understanding Guidance Counsellor. Her two years at Port Hope High School are the first two of her teaching career. She has a daughter who attends Cobourg District Collegiate Institute. Mrs Roberts is head of the Latin Department.
   
MR ERIC E ROSE, although new to PHHS as a teacher, is very familiar here, for he took his secondary school education at Port Hope High. A grad of OAC, he won fame as captain of the Old Boys' Team. Mr Rose is never late, for he and his August bride live only across the road.
   
MR KEITH G ROSE is a PHHS old boy who has come back and taught for eleven years. He teaches Mathematics, Physical and Health Education and Guidance. Mr Rose, a graduate of the University of Western Ontario, is married to a charming wife who has oft proven her devotion to Port Hope High. They have three children.
   
MR J S SCOTT joined the staff in September 1959. He was educated at Perth Collegiate Institute and Ontario College of Agriculture. Before coming to Port Hope, Mr Scott was at R H King Collegiate, Scarborough for five years where he taught Agricultural Science, and later at CDCI. He teaches grades 9 and 10 General Science, grades 11 and 13 Physics and grade 13 Zoology.
   
MR G S WALKER, another of the new teachers, was born in Winnipeg and received his BA, and Diploma in Education in his own home town, at the University of Manitoba. This is Mr Walker's first year of teaching. He teaches English, History and Guidance, and is the beloved form teacher of 12B.
   
MR L G WERNER is one of the newest members of our teaching faculty. He received his Bachelor of Music at U of T, and taught vocal and instrumental music at Deep River Public School, East York Junior High School, and Eastview High School.
   
MISS JOAN M COOKSON About her early life - Born in Saskatchewan, educated in Montreal, re-educated in Port Hope at PHHS! Her favourite expression - 'Why do you need an admission slip?' Favourite pastime - Talking on the telephone while the intercom is buzzing and the PA is turned on! Ambition - To ring the bells on time! Probable fate - 'The Cookie that crumbled!'
