Grade 13

ELIZABETH BANISTER Elizabeth, known only as 'Lizzie' has provided welcome comic relief for us during high school, especially with her initial efforts at basketball. Four years of conscientious 'violining' made her a valuable member of the orchestra. Always an eager honour student, Lizzie intends to let some lucky Ontario University benefit from her good nature next year.

CARL BAPTIST Carl, one of the three L-A-R-G-E-R men of the class, has to his credit the honour of having been not only the president of a most successful Young People's group, but also star lineman on the school football team. Carl plans to attend the Business Administration course at Ryerson after the completion of this year.

WILLIAM BARROWCLOUGH From the Lakeshore Wilds comes Bill Barrowclough, complete with an adventurous, funloving spirit, and an oversized trumpet which he plays for the entertainment and amusement of his fans. Bill loves to travel, and has braved many detentions to attend baseball games, football games and bowling tournaments. With luck he will be orbitting next September.

KERRY BASKEY Kerry is an energetic and loyal supporter of Grade 13. This year he is again on the Boy's AA as its president. A capable basketball player, his coolness and efficiency have paid off on many occasions. His natural ability to draw should make him a successful architect through Ryerson next year. Good luck old buddy.

WILLA BIGELOW Willa's name has become synonymous with the Blue 'n' White. Last year, under her editorship, the yearbook was miraculously transformed. 1959's Female Student of the Year according to staff and students, also gained fame through her artistic decorations for countless dances. Willa will doubtless enter Queen's next year, her father's beloved Alma Mater.

LAWRENCE BOYKO Lawrence, Grade 13's balding patriarch, left PHHS in 1954 for the 'outside', where he worked for the Department of Highways. In order to attain his goal, which is Engineering, he returned to complete his high school education in 1958. A former Commanding Officer of the Cadet Corps, he is now dedicated to hard work and driving little green buses.

PHILIP BOYKO Philip, a new member of our class this year is the studious type spending a good portion of his time riding in his brother's little green bus (Let's hope he has his life insurance paid!) Philip hopes to attend the Niagara School of Gardening next year. PS QUOTE: 'I am NOT a taxidermist.'

CAROL BRICKMAN Carol is a gay and enthusiastic member of our Grade 13. She adds sparkle and zest to everything in which she takes part, including intramural volleyball and basketball games. This should carry her far along with the earnest endeavours that we know she will put forth next year at Teacher's College, Peterborough.

CALVIN BROWN Look out! Here comes that distinguished 'bon vivant', Calvin Brown in his faithful '47 Dodge. This fun-loving character is a threat to the safety of the school every time he enters the Chemistry Lab, but chalked up a seventeen point game for the glory of PHHS during the basketball season (not bad for a fat man). Soon Charley will be a 'soldier of fortune', if he doesn't blow himself up first.

KAREN BULKOWSKI Karen is a quiet, conscientious member of our class with dancing eyes that belie her gentle exterior. She has been a spark to the school and intramural volleyball and basketball teams throughout high school. Karen has shown a determination in her scholastic studies that will take her a long way at St Michael's School of Nursing.

MALCOLM BURNESS What makes 'MO' go? That's a fair question. Name any activity that has snared his interest and you'll find him, grin and al,l at it's focal point. Science Club (Pres) Cadet Corps(2ndi/c), Boy's AA (Exec). Football and basketball are his specialties. Also scholastic (he won the Kiwanis-Eldorado scholarship.) Immediate future probably Queen's.

LINDA CHALLICE Linda has been a diligent student throughout her five years at high school. She has taken an active part in intramural basketball and volleyball games, and is also a member of the French Club. Next year she hopes to attend Teacher's College to train for her future vocation.

MARGARET CHESTNUT Marg, the youngest member of our chaotic class is a conscientious student with a cheery disposition. She has contributed much to the fame of Grade 13 in intramural activities and has become a skilled surgeon in Zoology class. In future years, Peterborough Civic Hospital will undoubtedly benefit greatly from the services of 'Nurse Marg'.

JOHN CRAWFORD John, a mainstay in the high school's Cadet Corps, especially in the shooting program, has spent these five years becoming expert in his favourite sports. He plays hockey with the 'Spitfires' and is an ardent golfer. Upon graduation he plans to study Engineering at Waterloo.

GWEN DARLING Gwen has been a quiet, successful student since Grade nine, in spite of her many activities. Through the years she has been a member of a choir, and French Club, studied piano and ballet, and has played intramural basketball. Surely by following these beginnings, Gwen will succeed in her chosen profession of teaching.

DAVID DUCHESNE David has taken an active interest in the band, orchestra, glee club and Music Council which is suited to his goal of teaching. This year he is Treasurer of the Dramatic Society and has worked his way to the rank of 'Chef-de-Groupe' in the French Club.

PATRICIA FROST Although Pat is the smallest Grade 13'er, she represents the largest class on the Students Council. She has played basketball and volleyball for the past four years, is a former member of the Blue 'n' White, and last year, a prize-winning essay won her a trip to Montreal. She plans to study languages at Queen's University.

JOHN GARLAND We have enjoyed 'Gar's' company this year because of his constant ad-libbing in class. Grade 13 will show unending gratitude to Trinity College School for its interesting gift to Port Hope High. Long and lanky, taking everything in his stride, John intends to study Engineering upon graduation.

JEAN GOODERHAM Throughout her high school career Jean has been a great asset to the school and class volleyball and basketball teams. She also takes an active part in French Club as a Chef de Groupe. Jeannie is known for her giggle which urges others on to laughter. Always an honour student, Jean will no doubt be successful when she enters Nursing.

JOHN HANCOCK As well as being a brilliant mathematics and science student, a crack shot on the rifle team and a former violinist in the orchestra, John is this year's president of the French Club, planning to study electronic engineering at Queen's after graduation, John got into shape this year by master-minding the installation of Miss Hammond's language sound lab.

WILLIAM HAYNES Although Bill has been active in school affairs, holding up the Spartans, playing deadly hockey, and loudly stating his imaginative ideas on the Students Council, his fame comes primarily from adventures in the South Seas, Cuba (during the revolt), Nassau and the Bahamas. We wonder if Ryerson can keep him in Radio and Television Arts, for wanderlust is hard to beat.

PATRICIA HOPE Or better known as Pat, is the 'speedy' redhead of the class, being our track and field star. Pat also enjoys music for, as well as being a member of the school orchestra for 4 years, she is still with her church choir. Upon graduation she is anticipating entering the Nightingale School of Nursing.

BARBARA KEYES Grade thirteen's enthusiastic athlete, Barb is making an excellent president of this year's Girls Athletic Association, especially with her announcements in assembly. A past master at confusing teachers (and herself), Barb is certainly not confused about her high opinion of PHHS and its school spirit. She hopes to join the Keyes clan in Phys Ed at Western.

MARJORIE LANG 'Marj' has been an energetic 'beam of sunshine' in our class for five years. She has chalked up many points for us in Track and Field, and has bolstered the ego of many PHHS athletes in her capacity as Cheerleader. She made a fine contribution to the orchestra with her viola. Nursing will be her probable career.

ARTHUR LAWSON Art, one-quarter of the famous 'Fabulous Four' quartet, has also shown his musical ability as leader of the glee club and as a member of the Music Council. In a dominion essay contest, Art earned second prize. This brilliant student will be an asset to the University of Toronto where he intends to further his studies.

HUDSON LEAVENS Hudson has been an invaluable member of our Senior Football team for three years, making some very outstanding plays. 'Jud' also lent his talents to the Blue 'n' White Staff as a photographer and Business Manager, where the phrase 'What would we do without him?' was often heard. Next year Queen's University will be the lucky recipient of all his many talents and interests.

PAUL McCREERY Paul, one of Grade 13's few quiet and diligent students, has made a high school career of 'cadeting '. His high scores in the shooting program have helped place our school on top many times. As a reward for his ceaseless work in the quartermaster's stores, Paul was given the Best Cadet Award. He will study Engineering at Toronto.

KATHLEEN McELROY Kay, the girl with the silver voice, has become PHHS's pride and joy through her many flawless performances both for the students and for the public. Kay is also famed for three more qualities - her hair-raising sneezes, her complicated questions, and her excellent marks. Converted to U of T, she intends to take Arts at Victoria.

PRESTON MERRILL Preston, always the tallest in the class, and almost equally so in respect to marks, played basketball for several years. As Commanding Officer of the Cadet Corps this year, Pres, a member of the Hasty Pees also, makes frequent visits to the Armouries. We are relying on Pres to carry on his good work at Queen's next year.

PATRICIA NICHOLSON Pat is the shy, little blond who came to us this year from Bath, where she attended Napanee and District Collegiate Institute. Her winning smile soon made her a welcome member of our class. Since she is a conscientious student, she is sure to succeed in her chosen vocation as a Medical Laboratory Technologist.

DONNA OUGHTRED Donna has been an active musician during her high school career, participating in both orchestra and glee club. Outside school she has shown an artistic skill in flower arranging, winning money awards, including CNE championships. In September, Toronto East General will welcome Donna as a 'probie', and after receiving her RN she plans to enter the RCAF.

SUZANNE PERRY Sue, because of her sparkling personality, intelligence, and 'drop-of-a-hat' enthusiasm has been a lively and admirable asset to PHHS through Students Council, French Club, and cheer leading. She has contributed greatly to the school's music program as President of the Music Council. After she has carved a favourable niche at U of T, we will remember her entertaining chats on our Saturday afternoon radio program.

HARRY PLUMMER Harry, our mathematical wizard, has systematically quizzed each member of our class on involved problems. In his spare time this year, Harry has again played a big part (no pun intended) on the school rifle teams. He has hopes of travelling through Europe next year and then entering university.

MARY LOU ROBERTS In grades eleven and twelve, Mary Lou was representative on the Blue 'n' White, and, for diversion, she worked on the weekends in the High School Hangout - Turck's Restaurant. After completion of Grade XIII, she plans to attend Peterborough Teachers' College in order to become a successful public school teacher.

FAYE ROWDEN Faye, always accompanied by the crash of books and 'what not', was an energetic cheerleader for three years, whittling her extra energy off on the violin and piano. Last year she dived 'body and soul' into the work of the Students Council taking time off to win the badminton championship. Faye plans to enter the teaching profession.

BURNEY SKITCH This redheaded sports enthusiast, founder of the well-known 'West Side Athletic Association', is usually up in the air pole vaulting or 'flying' with the rest of the 'Gymnastics Team'. Down on the ground he is noted for his musical achievements in town and school bands. For his BA, BPH.E at Queen's, Burney will use both brawn and brain.

TIMOTHY TAYLOR During high school, Tim has been thoroughly involved in extra-curricular music, participating in band, orchestra, and glee club. As last year's Student Council President, Tim won the coveted Blue 'n' White award, and has since become an indispensable member of the 1960 staff. After his seven years at Queen's, we'll be calling Dr Taylor for medical consultation.

DENNIS TORRELL Dennie has acquired his fame as the lead of the 'Fabulous Four'. He is a former member of the Glee Club and the Orchestra and he led the Cadet Band for three years. Although he is now an army man and was a Cadet Recruit Course instructor last summer, he plans to enter the Air Force next summer.

JEAN TROTTER Jeannie, as she is affectionately known by the Grade 13 crew, is our picturesque and vivacious contribution to the Senior Girls' Basketball Team, and to the Cheerleading Squad, where she has been a staunch supporter for three years. Jeannie will probably be voted the prettiest nurse in Canada when she completes her training at some lucky School of Nursing in Toronto.

JOAN WALKEY Joan has been a carefree, yet successful student. Outside of her studies she was for a year an orchestra member and for two years a French Club member. Her participation in intramural basketball and volley ball indicated her interest in sports. Being of an amiable temperament, Joan is SURE to succeed in her chosen field.

GORDON WATSON Throughout his high school years, Gord has participated in sports, playing on both town and school teams. A loyal 'Spartan', he was also active in the Cadet Corps and on several committees. He plans to further his education in a Business Course at Ryerson next fall.

JIM WEBSTER This member of Grade 13 has played an active part in various intramural sports and was basketball captain for House Three. He is one-half of the male enrolment in Latin class and is one of our snowbound rural students who studies his Biology with some success. He hopes to take Arts at Queen's next year.

WILLIAM WHITE Last year Bill risked the lives of his classmates on a ripping hayride over the unmapped bad lands of the Ganaraska Watershed. He is active on the Canton Charge Young Peoples, and has participated in the Cadet Corps for five years. Upon successful graduation, Bill intends to join the Airforce as an aircrewman.

LEIGH WINFIELD Leigh, the backbone of our Cadet Corps' shooting program, has recently brought distinction to himself by winning the Dominion-wide Cadet Hundred Roll. An avid lover of cars and rifles, he supports the school teams vocally and school dances personally. The Engineering course at Waterloo College will gain 'our Leigh' next year.

NOEL WRIGHT With education taking a substantial part in his school program, a BA or BSC at Queens would seem inevitable. A member of the Science Club and a devoted chemist, Noel likes to perform his own experiments. Despite three high schools in three consecutive years, Picton, Sydenham and Port Hope, this fellow still has his head above water and hopes to come high and dry at June.

Form News

The pick of the PHHS intellectuals this year have their homebase in Room 201 and claim the honoured position of the largest class in the school and largest grade XIII in the history of PHHS. We have accepted our responsibility as Upper School students and so 'Thirteeners' fill many of the executive positions in the school organizations - Boys' AA president, Girls' AA president, president of French Club and Commanding Officer of the Cadet Corps. Kerry demonstrated the spirit of these leaders the day that he took us to task in assembly.
Grade XIII took the honours on Field Day as the class with the highest number of points. In addition to this notable achievement we can boast of two individual record-breakers within our ranks: Pat Hope, who took the Senior Girls' Championship, broke the record for the 100 yard dash, and Burney who set a new record in Pole Vaulting. There are several representatives from Grade XIII on both the Girls' and Boys' Basketball Teams this year.
In the field of Cadets, every officer of the Cadet Corps is from Grade XIII and Leigh won glory for himself and his class when he earned the distinction of 'best shot' in Canada.
In October, most of the class visited Mediscope '59 in Toronto. This was very worthwhile undertaking and one which proved invaluable to our future nurses and doctors. This might also have been regarded as a supplement to Mr Scott's carving lessons in Zoology class. Our other trip to Toronto was of a very different nature, and was for the purpose of seeing the stage production of Macbeth at the Crest Theatre. Then in February a group of prospective university students attended Open House at Queens (much against Mrs Andersen's better judgement, for she hates to see people being led astray).
Grade XII has been granted a privilege this year, which no other Grade XIII has ever enjoyed; we are allowed to use the library at noon. Here, far away from the distractions of the outside world, we may be found any noon hour, working diligently in mutual understanding - the understanding that if the presence of any one of us becomes undesirable, we may be excommunicated.
Grade XIII presents such an interesting and wide variety of personalities that it would be impossible for me to do them all justice in a small space. We have a bus driver and the two students chosen as the most outstanding for '58/'59, Tim and Willa.
In later years, each member of our Grade XIII will be able to look back on our activities this year and say, in the words of Thomas Hardy, 'These things will always have been great things, great things to me.'
