The Sun and I
Margaret Cancilla

The sun peeked under the curtain,
And laid his hand on my bed.
And I'm sure I heard him whisper,
"Get up you sleepy head!

I've been up for over an hour now!
You'll sleep your life away."
So I put on my sunsuit and sandles
And went outside to play.

First we went to the beach,
And drew figures with a stick.
Then we went to the pasture,
And paddled our feet in the creek.

We helped farmer Brown take the cows home.
We helped Miss Smith find her dog.
We found some baby field mice,
In a nest in an old hollow log.

We went barefoot through the grass,
And up the dusty road.
We sat on a rock for awhile,
Watching a giant brown toad.

We played hide and seek midst the elms.
And pirates by the waterfall.
We played all day, just the two of us,
With nobody else at all.

When the sun at last grew tired,
And went home to his bed,
I said my prayers and crawled in mine,
And dreamed of the days ahead.
