Boys Athletic Association

This year the Boys' AA, under the directorship of Mr K Rose chose a new President in Kerry Baskey, a tried and proficient athlete of the school, who immediately set about to organize the boys' extra-curricular and intra-mural sports through the innovation of a House League system.
In this system the boys are divided into three houses, from which they form three teams to enter each sporting event. They are allotted points (for participating, refereeing and winning) which are totalled to determine the best House, and the School Championship.
In the financial department under M Burness, it was reported that the AA had spent well over $250.00 on football equipment alone, and had purchased new gym equipment in the form of mats and weights for body-building. Because of the support of the students at basketball games, the treasury is in better shape than usual, and it is hoped that warm-up jackets for the three basketball teams may be purchased this year.

Junior Football Team

FLASH - The Port Hope Junior Football team finally won a game this year upsetting St Peters. Behind the running of quarterback Grant Gifford and halfback Mike Greenaway the team came from behind a 6 to 0 deficit to win 12 to 6.
The team's let-down this year was not due to inability but to inexperience. This, and the size and strength of the other schools' teams proved too much for our boys. They were beaten 52 to 0 by Kenner, 20 to 0 by PCVI, 7 to 0 by Lindsay, and 34 to 0 by Cobourg; but even to the last second our boys were in there fighting, and after the game showed their true sportsmanship by congratulating the winning team. Next year with almost the same team coming back, the boys expect to go through the season undefeated and finish by winning the COSSA championship.

Senior Football Team

The Senior football team of 1959 proved to be a fairweather team, and unfortunately for them, it rained for their first two games. This resulted in a 20 to 7 drubbing at the hands of PCVS and a 10 to 0 rout by St Peter's. But just when they were classified as last place material, they calmly battered a win out of Kenner with Watson and Burness each counting for a pair of majors in the 28 to 21 score. Last but not least, to finish the schedule with a fifty percent average, they took on the Boastful Cobourg Vikings, who hadn't won a game all year but assumed that Port Hope would be a soft touch. By half-time the Spartans led by a 37 to 0 score on touchdowns by Watson and Burness, but had to concede 6 points to Cobourg in the final frame to come out on top 44 to 6. This game marked the end of many of the boys' high school football careers, but keep an eye on next year's university schedules!

Bantam Basketball Team

FLASH - Port Hope sweeps district Bantam Class Basketball Championship!! The Bantams, this year, though not an exceptionally tall team, showed the league that fast passing, quick thinking and sharp shooting can overcome such a minor handicap, and ended their season with a total of nine wins and one upset to bring the championship home to PHHS.

Junior Basketball Team

The Juniors, this year, were not so successful, and despite their height and high morale, lost the majority of their games to teams which proved even stronger. This losing streak can partly be explained by the fact that some of last year's Juniors who had made a great contribution to the team and who were still young enough to play in this division, failed to obtain sufficient marks on their Christmas exams. However, the Juniors wound up their season with a thriller against Lindsay in which only a three minute overtime period lost them the game.

Senior Basketball Team

The Seniors turned out to be the average of the three teams, winning fifty per-cent of their games. The season began rather badly with a loss against Kenner but this was due perhaps to the lack of pre-season games, since the Seniors defeated the Kenner team on the return game at Port Hope. As the season progressed, it saw the Seniors take two games from St Peter's, but these wins were cancelled by the two losses to PCVS. Cobourg, the traditional rival, was at first beaten at Port Hope but in the return game the referees and the small court proved too much for the wide-open style of the boys.
Lindsay 'Spartans' and PHHS 'Spartans' proved not only identical in name, but in strength, in that they forced an overtime period in the last two league games to determine the winner; Lindsay taking the first game and Port Hope the last game. The weather completed the comparison, providing the winter's two worst storms on the eve of the games. The Lindsay team managed to battle their way home through the blizzard, but a week later the Port Hope team was not so fortunate, to the delight of the players who received much appreciated attention and hospitality at the homes of the principal, staff and students of the Lindsay school.
